NHK Tiling is a licensed tiling contractor serving Northbridge, about 27 kilometres from the NHK Tiling base in Kellyville. Northbridge is an established family-home suburb where most houses have been through at least one renovation already. That makes the common tiling job here a second or third bathroom rather than an original one, and what a previous renovation left behind determines a lot about the work. Northbridge falls under Willoughby City Council.

What happens when a bathroom has been tiled more than once?

A bathroom that has been renovated before often has layers, and each layer changes the job.

Tile over tile builds height. Where a previous renovation tiled over the original surface rather than removing it, the floor sits higher than it was designed to. That affects the fall to the waste, the door clearance and the threshold. Adding a third layer usually compounds a problem rather than solving it.

The membrane may be buried or absent. In a wet area tiled over an older one, the original waterproofing may sit under a layer where it can no longer do anything useful, or there may never have been a compliant membrane at all. The only way to know is to strip back.

Falls get lost. Each layer flattens the intended slope toward the waste. A shower floor that drains slowly, or holds water in one corner, has usually lost its fall to a previous renovation.

NHK Tiling strips back to a sound substrate, re-establishes the falls, then waterproofs to AS 3740 across the shower, bath surround and splash zones before tiling.

How is an unknown substrate quoted?

Honestly, and in two parts. The visible work can be priced accurately from the outset. What sits behind the existing tiles cannot be, and pretending otherwise produces a quote that changes halfway through.

NHK Tiling quotes the known scope, then identifies what will be assessed at strip-out and what the likely remediation costs are if each is found. The three that recur are a missing or failed membrane, a floor with no usable fall, and water damage behind wall sheeting. Setting those out before work starts means a variation is a decision rather than a surprise.

Where a previous renovation is recent and documented, less is unknown. Where it is decades old and undocumented, more of the quote is conditional, and that is stated plainly.

Can existing tiles be kept?

Sometimes, and it is worth assessing rather than assuming either way. Tiling over an existing surface works where the tiles are solid, level, free of cracks and free of hollow sounds when tapped, and where the added height does not compromise falls, door clearances or thresholds.

It does not work where tiles are loose or drummy, where the surface is uneven, where there is any sign of moisture behind, or where a previous layer has already consumed the available height. In a Northbridge home that has been renovated before, the last of these rules it out more often than people expect.

Common Questions About Tiling Services Northbridge

My shower drains slowly. Is that a tiling problem?
Usually it is a fall problem rather than a drainage blockage, and it is common in a bathroom that has been tiled over at least once. Each added layer flattens the slope toward the waste. Correcting it means re-establishing the fall, not just replacing tiles.
How do I know if there is a waterproof membrane behind my tiles?
Often you cannot without stripping back. In older or previously renovated Northbridge bathrooms the membrane may be buried under a later layer or may never have existed. Signs of trouble include drummy tiles near the shower, grout that darkens soon after cleaning, and staining on an adjoining wall or ceiling.
Will the quote change once work starts?
The known scope is fixed. What sits behind existing tiles is assessed at strip-out, and the likely remediation items and their costs are set out in the quote beforehand, so any variation is a decision rather than a surprise.
Can you tile over my existing bathroom tiles?
Only if they are solid, level, free of cracks and hollow sounds, and only if the added height does not compromise the fall to the waste or the door clearance. In a bathroom already tiled over once, that last condition often rules it out.
Which council covers Northbridge?
Willoughby City Council, the same as Chatswood, Artarmon and Willoughby.
