NHK Tiling is a licensed tiling contractor serving Mosman, about 30 kilometres from the NHK Tiling base in Kellyville. Five kinds of work come up repeatedly in Mosman, and each has its own considerations.
Bathroom tiling in Mosman starts with what is behind the existing tiles, because much of the housing stock predates current wet-area standards.
Older Mosman homes frequently reveal problems at strip-out. The three that recur are a shower with no compliant membrane, a floor with no fall towards the waste, and water damage behind the wall sheeting. NHK Tiling waterproofs to AS 3740 across the shower, bath surround and splash zones, giving additional attention to corners, junctions and penetrations, and allows the membrane to cure fully before tiling.
Apartment bathrooms are a different job. The slab needs levelling and priming rather than structural sheeting, but owners corporation approval is generally required because the membrane protects the lot below. Lift access and permitted work hours are set by building management. NHK Tiling confirms approvals and access before scheduling.
Older Mosman floors usually do. Houses built on bearers and joists have a timber subfloor that flexes, and tiles do not. Australian Standard AS 3958 limits how far a floor may deflect before tiles and grout begin to fail, so the floor is stiffened and sheeted before tiling, with movement joints set at the perimeter and at any change of substrate.
Two Mosman-specific factors add to this. Harbour-facing blocks are often steep, which means split levels and more transitions to set out. And older homes settle, so walls are rarely square and floors rarely flat, which affects the practical tile size. Large format tiles need a flatter substrate; smaller formats follow minor variation more forgivingly.
Apartments are simpler underfoot but bring their own condition: most strata schemes require acoustic underlay when carpet is replaced with tile, which adds height to the floor build-up and affects door clearances.
A harbour position means salt reaches surfaces that never get splashed, so tile, grout and sealing are chosen for exposure rather than appearance alone.
Pools. Pool tiles must tolerate constant submersion, chlorine or salt and daily temperature swings. NHK Tiling uses ceramic, porcelain, stone or glass rated for submerged use with epoxy grout, because cement-based grout degrades under continuous water and pool chemistry. The waterline band and coping take the most wear and are the surfaces seen most often.
Terraces and surrounds. Dense, low-absorption porcelain and properly sealed stone handle airborne salt well. On exposed external work the grout line usually degrades before the tile does, which is why epoxy grout is specified outdoors. Slip rating matters wherever a surface is walked on wet.
Falls and drainage. On a steep harbour-facing block water moves fast and concentrates at the low point. A terrace above habitable space needs waterproofing to AS 3740, not just correct falls.

Mosman has its own council, separate from North Sydney and Willoughby, and its rules affect two parts of a typical job.
Approvals. Retiling a bathroom or an internal floor does not change a building’s external appearance, so it is generally exempt development. The exception is a property individually listed as a heritage item, where internal work can require council approval. That differs from a property sitting inside a heritage conservation area, which is not automatically affected. Mosman contains both, so checking the property on the Mosman Council map before booking is worth doing.
Access and waste. Mosman streets are narrow in places and many properties sit well below or above street level. A skip on the roadway or nature strip requires a Mosman Council permit; inside the property boundary it does not. NHK Tiling settles access and skip placement during the quote visit.
