NHK Tiling is a licensed tiling contractor serving Clontarf, about 30 kilometres from the NHK Tiling base in Kellyville. Transition areas take a combination of loads that no internal floor sees: abrasion from sand, constant wetting, and heavy barefoot traffic.
Sand is abrasive. Sand tracked across a tiled surface acts like a grinding compound underfoot. Softer tiles and softer glazes dull and scratch in these areas far faster than they would indoors, so the tile is chosen for hardness as much as appearance.
Wet feet need grip. These are the surfaces most likely to be walked on wet, so slip rating matters more here than anywhere else on the property.
Grout takes the wear. Between the abrasion and the constant wetting, grout in a transition area degrades before the tile does. Epoxy grout forms a dense, non-porous seal and holds up considerably better.
Drainage has to actually work. Water arriving with people needs somewhere to go, or it finds its way to the threshold and inside.
An outdoor shower or foot-wash is a wet area, and it is treated as one. The surface needs a fall to a drainage point, tile and grout specified for constant wetting, and a slip rating suited to bare wet feet.
Where the area sits against the house, the junction with the wall matters. Water repeatedly hitting the base of a wall will find any gap in the detailing, so that junction is sealed properly rather than treated as an outdoor surface that can drain wherever it likes.
Where an outdoor wet area sits above habitable space, such as over a garage or lower storey, it needs waterproofing to AS 3740 in the same way an internal bathroom does.
The threshold between an outdoor wet area and the house interior is where most problems appear, because it is where two different surfaces and two different drainage assumptions meet.
The outdoor side should fall away from the door, not toward it. A step or a level change helps, but only if the outdoor surface still drains to its own point rather than relying on the step to hold water back. Where the internal floor is tiled as well, the change in material or level is set out deliberately so the join reads as intentional rather than as an afterthought.
