Industrial tiling is a different specification to domestic work. The load is the first consideration: a warehouse or workshop floor may carry trolleys, pallet movement or wheeled equipment, which places demands on both the tile and the bed beneath it that a house floor never sees. Dense, low-absorption porcelain is the usual answer, with the substrate assessed for its ability to carry the load without movement.
Chemical and moisture exposure comes second. Workshop and food-handling areas can see spills, washdown and cleaning regimes far harsher than a domestic kitchen. Epoxy grout matters here more than anywhere, because it forms a dense, non-porous seal that resists staining and breakdown where cement-based grout would degrade.
Slip rating is third. Wet industrial floors are a genuine safety issue, and the rating is specified against the actual conditions of the space before tiles are ordered.
Artarmon’s residential area is largely interwar housing, so the tiling questions there match the older Lower North Shore pattern. Homes from that era generally sit on bearers and joists, and a timber subfloor must be stiffened and sheeted before tiling so the finished floor does not crack as the timber moves. Products used are Mapei, Davco, Laticrete and Ardex. Large format porcelain is available up to 3600mm slabs, which suits commercial and industrial floors where fewer grout lines are wanted.
Commercial and industrial tiling in Artarmon is quoted on access as much as on area. Occupied premises usually need staged work so part of the space keeps operating, and that often means evening or weekend access. Cure times cannot be compressed, so the programme has to allow for the membrane and the adhesive to reach strength before the floor takes load again.
