NHK Tiling is a licensed tiling contractor serving Vaucluse and the Eastern Suburbs. Vaucluse is almost entirely detached housing on substantial blocks, with a high number of swimming pools and homes that commonly have three or more bathrooms. That produces larger tiling jobs than most suburbs, and it removes the strata complications that apply in apartment suburbs. Vaucluse falls under Woollahra Council. NHK Tiling has traded since 1995 under NSW contractor licence 316043C.
Scale is the main difference. Vaucluse jobs tend to be larger and to involve more than one wet area at once, which changes how the work is planned rather than how it is done.
Multiple bathrooms means sequencing. A home with three or four bathrooms does not need them all out of action at once. Working through them in sequence keeps the household functioning, and it is a decision worth making at quote stage rather than midway.
Large floor areas need considered setout. Open living areas running to 60 square metres or more require properly placed movement joints and a setout planned from the start. Across a long run a small error at the beginning is obvious by the far wall.
No strata approvals. Because Vaucluse is overwhelmingly detached housing, jobs here avoid the owners corporation approvals, lift bookings and restricted work hours that govern apartment work elsewhere. The schedule is set by the household, not a building manager.
Pool tiling is a common Vaucluse job and uses materials that no internal work requires. Pool tiles must tolerate constant submersion, chlorine or salt, and daily temperature swings.
NHK Tiling uses ceramic, porcelain, stone or glass rated for submerged use, set with epoxy grout, because cement-based grout degrades under continuous water and pool chemistry. Three surfaces get separate attention: the waterline band, which takes the most chemical exposure and shows wear first; the coping edge, which is handled constantly; and any step markings, which have both a safety and a visual function.
Surrounds need a slip rating suited to wet feet, and the fall has to carry water to a drainage point rather than back toward the house.
Vaucluse sits between the harbour and the ocean cliffs, so external surfaces see salt-laden air even where they are never splashed. That pushes external specification the same way it does in coastal suburbs.
Dense, low-absorption porcelain handles the exposure well. Natural stone can be used and often suits the housing here, but it needs sealing repeated across the life of the surface rather than once at installation. On exposed external work the grout line generally degrades before the tile, which is why epoxy grout is specified outdoors.
NHK Tiling works with Mapei, Davco, Laticrete and Ardex systems, and with sandstone, travertine, limestone, bluestone, terrazzo, basalt, marble, granite, porcelain, ceramic and mosaic. Large format porcelain runs to slabs of 3600mm.
Woollahra Council rules affect approvals and waste. Retiling a bathroom or an internal floor does not change a building’s external appearance, so it is generally exempt development and needs no development application.
The exception is a property individually listed as a heritage item, where internal work can require council approval. That differs from a property inside a heritage conservation area, which is not automatically affected. Vaucluse contains heritage listings, so checking the property with Woollahra Council before booking is worth doing.
For waste, a skip inside the property boundary needs no permit. A skip on the roadway or nature strip requires one from Woollahra Council. Vaucluse blocks are generally large enough to keep the skip on site, which is one fewer thing to arrange.
NHK Tiling also tiles in Rose Bay and across the Eastern Suburbs tiling service area.
